The Icy Tour Official Poster Contest - Fan Winner

Twenty One Pilots partnered up with Creative Allies to host a poster design contest for The Icy Tour 2022. This design was one of the five Fan Votes winners and was selected by the fans with the ultimate decision made by the band.

With this project created in early summer, I remember debating if I should even take part in it. After thinking it over, I figured what did I have to lose and so the processs began. Below is a dive into how this poster came to be from beginning to end.

Scratchy Lines and Color Blocks

As a fan of the band for 5+ years, I conceptualized a design that focused more on the meaning/story behind the band’s story, album artwork, and the messages behind their songs. The paper concept was a quick pencil sketch that incorporated iconography. The sketching phase focused more on the layout and where to start.

A little backstory on how my icons came about for this project…

Each icon on this sheet spans across the band’s timeline from back in the day to today. The motive for this concept stemmed from both a limited color palette and the motivation to highlight this dynamic duo, their unique albums and songs, music videos, tour eras, and of course their dedicated fanbase.

Maybe you’re wondering why some icons are filled and some are not. After trial and error, the small hints of color gave the poster a cool tone that matched the band; they didn’t constrain their music or style to one singular look, color outside the lines.

The interesting project outcome that I did not see coming in the summer of 2022…

Everything went quiet for a while after my entry was submitted. One of my best friends got to see the entry, but other than that, it wasn’t shown to anyone else. It was never posted on my socials or anything of influence; it was all up to the entry at that point.

The voting period passes by and the next thing you know, the band releases a video announcing the winners and Tyler Joseph says my name with my design in the background!! (see the TikTok video)

It was so surreal to tell you the truth. Thank you to everyone who supported this poster and voted for it! Thank you to Twenty One Pilots and Creative Allies for hosting this contest to allow fans to create art and showcase our love and dedication!
